Another Radu Lupu! He plays the Piano Concerto No. 21 by Mozart at the top of the show. What do you think about those cadenzas?
Then we move on to George Lloyd and his somewhat political piece The Road Through Samarkand. It seems to me to be a piece making fun of the “eastern”movement that had taken over in the 70s. Drugs and Meditation. But the piece doesn’t sound like that. It’s virtuosic. Written for John Ogdon. Very cool piano writing at times.
I closed the program with the two piano suite En Blanc et Noir by Claude Debussy from a new album featuring Kirill Gerstein. There is much to discover on the rest of the album that I hope to share on a future show. I chose this one because the other pianist is the composer Thomas Ades.
Have a musical week,
David Kiser
